What is Multiplication?

  • Multiplication is a way of adding the same number many times.
  • It helps us find out how many things we have in total when we have groups of the same size.
  • We can think of it as counting quickly by using groups.
Examples:
  • Counting apples:
    • If you have 3 bags of apples and each bag has 4 apples, you can multiply: 3 x 4 = 12 apples.
    • This means you have 12 apples in total!

  • Counting cookies:
    • If you bake 5 trays of cookies and each tray has 6 cookies, you can multiply: 5 x 6 = 30 cookies.
    • So, you made 30 yummy cookies!

  • Counting pencils:
    • If you have 4 boxes of pencils and each box has 10 pencils, you can multiply: 4 x 10 = 40 pencils.
    • This means there are 40 pencils to use!
