What are Asteroids, Comets, and Meteors?

Asteroids: Asteroids are big rocks that float around in space. They are much smaller than planets but are still important!

  • Asteroids can be found in a belt between Mars and Jupiter.
  • They are made of metal and rock.
  • Some asteroids can be very big, like the size of a city!

Comets: Comets are like dirty snowballs that travel in space. When they get close to the Sun, they make a tail!

  • Comets are made of ice, dust, and gas.
  • They can have long tails that shine in the night sky.
  • One famous comet is Halley's Comet, which comes around every 76 years!

Meteors: Meteors are little bits of rock that fall from space to Earth. When they enter our atmosphere, they light up!

  • Meteors are also called "shooting stars."
  • They burn up in the sky, creating bright streaks of light.
  • If a meteor reaches the ground, it is called a meteorite!

Fun Fact: Asteroids, comets, and meteors all help scientists learn about our solar system! They tell us about how it was made a long time ago.
