What are Asteroids, Comets, and Meteors?
Asteroids:
Asteroids are big rocks that float around in space. They are much smaller than planets but are still important!
- Asteroids can be found in a belt between Mars and Jupiter.
- They are made of metal and rock.
- Some asteroids can be very big, like the size of a city!
Comets:
Comets are like dirty snowballs that travel in space. When they get close to the Sun, they make a tail!
- Comets are made of ice, dust, and gas.
- They can have long tails that shine in the night sky.
- One famous comet is Halley's Comet, which comes around every 76 years!
Meteors:
Meteors are little bits of rock that fall from space to Earth. When they enter our atmosphere, they light up!
- Meteors are also called "shooting stars."
- They burn up in the sky, creating bright streaks of light.
- If a meteor reaches the ground, it is called a meteorite!
Fun Fact: Asteroids, comets, and meteors all help scientists learn about our solar system! They tell us about how it was made a long time ago.
