How do we borrow in subtraction?
- Borrowing in subtraction is when we need to take away a bigger number from a smaller number.
- We can't do that directly, so we borrowed a number from the next column.
- It's like asking a friend for help!
Examples:
- Example 1 - 34 - 19:
- In this case, we should take 9 from 4. But 4 is smaller than 9.
- So we borrow 1 from the 3 (which becomes 2). Now we have 14 in the 10s column.
- Now, we subtract: 14 - 9 = 5 and 2 - 1 = 1. The answer is 15.
- Example 2 - 52 - 28:
- Here, we want to subtract 8 from 2. We can't do that because 2 is less than 8.
- So we borrow a 1 from the 5, which becomes 4. Now 2 becomes 12.
- Now, we subtract: 12 - 8 = 4 and 4 - 2 = 2. The answer is 24.
- Example 3 - 73 - 47:
- For this example, we need to subtract 7 from 3. We can't do it!
- So, we borrow from 7. Now 7 becomes 6 and 3 becomes 13.
- Now, we subtract: 13 - 7 = 6 and 6 - 4 = 2. The answer is 26.
