How Can We Add by Counting?

  • Adding by counting means putting numbers together to find a total.
  • We can count how many items we have one by one.
  • It's like counting how many apples you have if you get more from a friend.
Examples:
  • Counting apples:
    • If you have 2 apples and your friend gives you 3 more.
    • You can count: "1, 2 (my apples), 3, 4, 5 (my friend's apples)." So, 2 + 3 = 5 apples.

  • Counting cookies:
    • If you have 4 cookies and Mom bakes 2 more.
    • You can count: "1, 2, 3, 4 (my cookies), 5, 6 (Mom's cookies)." So, 4 + 2 = 6 cookies.

  • Counting toys:
    • If you have 5 toy cars and you get 3 new ones as a gift.
    • You can count: "1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (my cars), 6, 7, 8 (gift cars)." So, 5 + 3 = 8 toy cars.
