How are Metamorphic Rocks Created?
- Metamorphic rocks are made from other rocks that change due to heat and pressure.
- This process can take a long time and happens deep inside the Earth.
- There are two main types of rocks that can turn into metamorphic rocks: igneous and sedimentary rocks.
- Magma and lava are very hot and can change rocks, while squeezing rocks together can also create change.
Examples:
- Slate is made from shale when it gets pushed down deep in the Earth and squeezed tightly.
- Gneiss forms from granite when it gets heated and squeezed, creating bands of colors.
- Marble is created from limestone that changes when it meets heat and pressure.
Fun Fact: Metamorphic rocks can be very beautiful! Marble, for example, is often used for making sculptures and buildings because of its nice patterns.
