Why is Mars Called the Red Planet?

  • Mars is called the Red Planet because it looks red when we see it in the sky.
  • The red color comes from a lot of iron in the rocks and dirt on Mars.
  • When the iron gets wet or rusty, it turns red, just like metal does here on Earth.

Examples:

  • When you see a rusty bicycle outside, it has turned red because of the iron in it.
  • Some people like to paint things red, and Mars looks red because of its special rocks.
  • If you have seen a red clay pot, it is similar to the color of Mars because of iron in its soil.

Fun Fact: Mars is not always red; sometimes it looks more like orange or brown, depending on the time of day and the weather!
