What is the Shape of the Earth?

  • The Earth is shaped like a giant ball, but we call it an "oblate spheroid." This means it's a bit squished at the top and bottom.
  • Because of this shape, when you see the Earth from space, it looks round like a ball.
  • This special shape helps the Earth spin and keeps the oceans and air around it.

Examples:

  • When you look at a globe, you can see that the Earth is round, just like a basketball.
  • If you've ever seen pictures of Earth from space, you'll notice it looks like a blue and green ball.
  • When ships sail away, they seem to disappear from the bottom up, showing us that the Earth is round.

Fun Fact: Even though the Earth looks big, it takes just 24 hours to spin all the way around once!
