What is Subtraction?

  • Subtraction is a way to take one number away from another.
  • It helps us find out how many are left when we remove some.
  • We use the minus sign (-) to show subtraction.
Examples:
  • Eating apples:
    • If you have 5 apples and you eat 2 apples, you can subtract:
    • 5 - 2 = 3, so you have 3 apples left!

  • Playing with toys:
    • If you start with 10 toy cars and give away 4, you subtract:
    • 10 - 4 = 6, now you have 6 toy cars!

  • Counting money:
    • If you have 20 pounds and you spend 7 pounds on a toy, you subtract:
    • 20 - 7 = 13, so you have 13 pounds left!
