What is Place Value?
- Place value tells us the value of a digit based on its position in a number.
- In the number 345, the 3 is in the hundreds place, so it means 300.
- It helps us understand how big or small a number is by looking at where the digits are.
Examples:
- Understanding the number 56:
- In the number 56, the 5 is in the tens place.
- That means it is really 50.
- The number 200:
- In the number 200, the 2 is in the hundreds place.
- So, it means 200 and not just 2!
- The number 743:
- In 743, the 7 is in the hundreds place, which means 700.
- The 4 is in the tens place, meaning 40.
