What is Backward Counting?

  • Backward counting is when we count numbers from a bigger number to a smaller number.
  • For example, instead of counting up like "1, 2, 3," we might say "10, 9, 8."
  • This helps us understand how to count down and helps with subtraction!
Examples:
  • Counting down from 10:
    • If you have 10 candies, you can count them down: "10, 9, 8, 7..." until you have none left!

  • Countdown Timer:
    • When you have a timer for a game, you might count down from 5: "5, 4, 3, 2, 1!"
    • That tells everyone when the game starts!

  • Counting Floors in a Building:
    • If you want to go down from the 5th floor, you could say: "5, 4, 3, 2, 1" as you walk down.
