What is Subtraction?

  • Subtraction is taking away one number from another.
  • It helps us find out how many are left after something is taken away.
  • It is the opposite of addition.
Examples:
  • Eating cookies:
    • If you have 10 cookies and eat 3, you subtract 3 from 10.
    • You have 10 - 3 = 7 cookies left!

  • Books on a shelf:
    • If there are 5 books on a shelf and you give 2 to a friend, you take away 2.
    • You have 5 - 2 = 3 books left on the shelf!

  • Marbles in a jar:
    • If you have 12 marbles in a jar and lose 4 while playing, you subtract 4.
    • You have 12 - 4 = 8 marbles left!
