What do the hands on a clock represent?

  • The hands on a clock tell us the time of day.
  • There are usually two or three hands: the short hand, the long hand, and sometimes a second hand.
  • The short hand shows the hour, which is how far it is in the day.
  • The long hand shows the minutes, which are like small parts of the hour.
  • If there's a second hand, it ticks off each second.
Examples:
  • Short hand for hour:
    • If the short hand is on the 3, it means it is 3 o'clock.
    • So, it's time to start your lunch!

  • Long hand for minutes:
    • If the long hand is on the 6, it means there are 30 minutes past the hour.
    • This could be 3:30 if the short hand is still on 3.

  • Second hand for seconds:
    • If the second hand is moving around the clock, it's counting seconds.
    • When you count to 60, a minute has passed!
