How Does Water Evaporate?

  • Evaporation is when water turns into gas called water vapor.
  • This happens when the sun shines and warms up the water.
  • When water gets warm enough, it starts to float into the air.
  • Even on a cool day, water can still evaporate slowly!

Examples:

  • Puddles on the ground dry up after it rains because the sun warms the water, and it evaporates.
  • If you leave a wet towel outside, it will slowly become dry as the water evaporates in the sun.
  • When you boil water for cooking, steam rises up. That steam is water vapor from evaporation!

Fun Fact: Evaporation is a part of the water cycle, which helps bring rain back to the ground!
