How is subtraction the opposite of addition?

  • Addition is when we put things together to make a bigger number.
  • Subtraction is when we take things away to make a smaller number.
  • So, if we add, we are joining; if we subtract, we are removing.
Examples:
  • Adding apples:
    • If you have 3 apples and you add 2 more, you have 5 apples (3 + 2 = 5).
    • Now, if you take away 2 apples, you go back to 3 apples (5 - 2 = 3).

  • Adding blocks:
    • If you have 4 blocks and you add 6 more, you now have 10 blocks (4 + 6 = 10).
    • If you take away 6 blocks from 10, you go back to 4 blocks (10 - 6 = 4).

  • Adding candies:
    • If you start with 5 candies and then get 3 more, you have 8 candies (5 + 3 = 8).
    • If you eat 3 candies, you will have 5 candies left (8 - 3 = 5).
